In a significant step toward improving neonatal care, a human milk bank has been established at Pt. B.D. Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak, in collaboration with the National Health Mission (NHM). Claimed to be the first of its kind in any government institution in Haryana, the facility will provide pasteurised donor breast milk to premature and critically ill newborns whose mothers are unable to breastfeed.
Dr. Jagjit Dalal, alumnus of PGIMS Rohtak and Head of Neonatology, shared that the bank is currently operating on a trial basis and will soon be expanded with additional equipment. “This facility ensures safe and nutritious feeding for vulnerable infants and will be a lifeline for many families,” he added.
The project, set up at a cost of ₹40 lakh, is equipped with medical-grade pumps, pasteurisers, deep freezers, sterilisers, a milk analyser, and a labelling and tracking system to ensure safe handling.
